As the world looks to electric cars and stores renewable energy, a big challenge looms: What will happen to all those old lithium batteries?

The world we know will change as the quiet hum of electric cars replaces the rev and toxic fumes of internal combustion engines. The pungent smell of petrol stations will gradually disappear, to be replaced by odorless charging stations where cars can be recharged as needed. Meanwhile, gas-fired power stations that dot the horizon could be converted to house large batteries that could one day power entire cities with renewable energy.

This electrified future is closer than you might think. General Motors announced earlier this year that it planned to stop selling gasoline-powered cars by 2035. Audi aims to stop making such cars by 2033, and many other big car companies are following suit. In fact, according to Bloomberg, two-thirds of global passenger car sales will be electric by 2040. Thanks to advances in battery storage technology, grid-scale systems are developing rapidly around the world. While this sounds like the ideal way to achieve sustainable energy and road travel, there\'s one big problem. Currently, lithium-ion batteries, which are often used in electric vehicles and in super-capacity batteries for storing renewable energy, are difficult to recycle.

As expected, the drive to recycle more electric vehicles will spread rapidly through the battery and auto industries as demand for them continues to escalate

One reason is that the most widely used methods of recycling conventional batteries, such as lead-acid batteries, do not work well with lithium batteries. The latter are usually larger, heavier, more complex and can even be dangerous if not taken apart properly
