What's 316? Stainless Steel?
Many alloys are added on steel to enhance its desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of harsh environments.
There are various types for stainless steel that are 316. Most commonly used are L, F, N, and H variants. Each differs slightly, and is utilized for the same purpose. L indicates that 316L steel has an amount of carbon that is lower than the 316.
the 316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Though they're similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both provide better resistance to corrosion, and are more durable even at high temperatures. They cannot also be hardened with heat treatment and can be easily stretched and shaped.
Differentialities between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon than 316. Although it has a higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar with 316 in practically every way. The price is comparable, while both are extremely durable and resistant against corrosion, making it a suitable choice for conditions that require a lot of stress.
For projects that require a significant amount of welding, 316L is the preferred choice because 316 more susceptible to welding corrosion as compared to an 316L (corrosion of the weld). However, 316L can be annealed, allowing it to resist welding attenuation. Additionally, it is a suitable stainless steel choice for high temperatures and high corrosion applications and that is the reason it is so widely used for marine and construction.
None of 316 nor 316L is the cheapest option. The 304 is similar to the 304L and 304L, however, the price is much lower. It isn't as durable as the 317 and 317L with more molybdenum and have better durability overall.
